SHEP (School Holiday Enrichment Programme) is a school-based programme that provides healthy meals, food and nutrition education, physical activity and enrichment sessions to primary school children in areas of social deprivation during the summer holidays. The initiative is jointly funded by the Welsh Government and Local Authorities.
During August 2018 First Campus supported the programme offering local Primary schools the opportunity have specialist tutors visit their schools to deliver sessions in Creative Dance, Street Dance and Parkour that aimed to promote physical activity with a fun and enjoyable approach.
First Campus also hosted two school visits from Springwood Primary School and Ninian Park Primary School at Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cyncoed Campus.
The visits combined enrichment sessions with an experience of a higher education environment. On 9th August, Ninian Park Primary School bought 50 pupils and parents to Cyncoed for a day of activities. As part of the day, we were also fortunate to host a visit from Vaughan Gething, Cabinet Secretary Health and Social Services who was visiting the programme to see the impact on the pupils and their families.
