Welcome to the First Campus Summer Challenge!

Project Description

Welcome to the First Campus Summer Challenge!

We have put together 4 sessions for the children this summer, one for each week of the holiday provision. The sessions have all been planned to be 1 – 1.5 hours long, and we have provided all equipment they will need for the sessions, which they will receive in a bag for each weekly session. They can take home any resources they don’t use, along with the pens and pencils provided. At the end of the 4 weeks, we will also provide a goody bag with some First Campus merchandise for them to keep.

The sessions are planned to take place weekly, and we are encouraging schools to engage with us on social media (Instagram and Twitter handles @firstcampus), tag us in your photos so we can see what you’re getting up to. Schools can win prizes linked to each session through their engagement with us on social media and sharing content showing the work that the children have produced. The session overviews and prizes available are detailed below, detailed session plans can be found in the weekly teacher packs.

Week 1 – Grow Your Own This session helps teach children to understand how things grow, and the various elements they need to make this happen. The session starts with a ‘treasure hunt’ around the school grounds to find answers to various clues on what makes plants grow. The children will then plant their own sunflowers to take home and grow in competition with a parent/carer. School Prize: The child with the tallest sunflower (parent/carer to share pictures on our social media) will win a class visit to Cardiff Met to take part in a Forest Schools session with our School of Education (all expenses paid). Individual Prize: Everyone who returns their sunflower growth charts to the school in September goes in a raffle – chance to win a £20 Amazon voucher

Week 2 – Well-being – Aroma Dough The session is focused on relaxation following what has been a stressful time for many, and will involve making aroma dough and an activity where the children design their own aroma plant. The instructions on how to make the dough are included in the teacher pack but we have also produced a short video of one of our staff making the dough which you can play if you wish. The link to the video has been emailed to the school. Prize: The child with the most creative aroma plant will win class visit to Cardiff Met to take part in a complimentary healthcare session. Individual Prize: Everyone who hands in their activity sheet at the end of the session will go in a raffle – chance to win a £20 Amazon voucher

Week 3 – Food Art The session focuses on the huge variety of different colours in which you can get fruit and vegetables, and the importance of trying different foods and of eating as wide a range of colours as possible. The teacher brief covers this in detail, and there is a pupil worksheet to get them to think about what foods come in the various colours. In each pack, the children will have a pencil, a set of colouring pens and some paper plates and are asked to draw different types of food in one colour on the plate. They will then put all the different coloured plates of food together to form a rainbow, or some other creative artwork, which will form their entry to this week’s competition. School Prize: The school with the most colourful and creative rainbow mural win a class visit to Cardiff Met to take part in an Art and Design session with our School of Art (all expenses paid). Individual Prize: Every child who completes the task goes in a raffle – chance to win a £20 Amazon voucher. (Teacher to provide us with a list of names of all who completed).

Week 4 – Apples and Monsters This is another fun arty session, this time focused on sculpture and creation. We have provided instructions in both the teacher and pupil pack of how to create small monsters and fruit out of wool and pipe cleaners, the student’s packs will contain pipe cleaners and sticky eyes, with each ‘class’ provided with balls of wool in a range of colours from which to make their creations. School Prize: The school with the most creative fruit bowl and monster takeover, will win a class visit to Cardiff Met to take part in a sport session with our School of Sport and Health Sciences (all expenses paid). Individual Prize: Every child who completes the task goes in a raffle – chance to win a £20 Amazon voucher. (Teacher to provide us with a list of names of all who completed).
