Hi! My name is Jess and I’m a First Campus Administrator based in the University of South Wales since August 2019. I have experience of working in schools and as a part time lecturer within the USW Animation department, along with working in various administration and compliance roles previously. It was really rewarding to engage with students from all different backgrounds. I feel proud of the work First Campus do, tackling barriers to education for those who are in challenging circumstances.
My main background is within art and I loved my journey through higher education. I completed a bachelor’s degree in Computer Animation in 2013, took a year out for work and then embarked on a Masters degree in Animation in 2014. Having come from an area of deprivation within the South Wales valleys, I always felt that University was not easily attainable. However, after finishing both my degrees, the sense of achievement I felt was amazing. It doesn’t matter where you come from or how old you are, when you put your mind to something you can definitely reach your goals!
Throughout University, I always felt supported and encouraged by my course lecturers and University support staff. Going back to do the masters was a big step, but I’m so glad I took it. I learned some new skills, ways of working and developed my skills even further. I also met some amazing new friends and it has given me some wonderful opportunities.
I aspire to become a children’s book author one day, writing and illustrating books that bring joy to children and adults alike. Being in First Campus has really opened doors with me getting in touch with my creative side and it really has helped me grow.
Art is not my only passion and have many other hobbies. I love music and you can normally find me listening to my playlists and singing along. I’m also a keen gamer, playing both board games and video games – normally with family and friends on the weekends! I also love films, binging a good tv series and anime (Japanese animation).
