Twelve young people aged 13 – 16 spent three days during May Half Term in the ATRiuM Studios, University of South Wales, working on a reconstruction and recording of Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’. This songwriting workshop involved a deconstruction of the structure of ‘Beat It’ and a reconstruction of the song as an original mix and recording. The young musicians learned the individual instrument pieces, how to identify and replicate the riff and loops and patterns throughout the song. The final day of the workshop was spent making a live recording of a remix of the original song.
Young pianist and participant Isaac Collins was quoted as saying, “I had an awesome time, learnt a lot about how to write a song and learnt more piano. I can’t wait for Summer School.”
