Chemistry at Work 2019
27th March 2019 @ 9:30 am - 2:30 pm
Year 10 pupils will be visiting Glyntaff Campus at USW to learn how Chemistry fits into everyday life.
The day will be split into 3 practical sessions exploring a range of chemistry processes and considering their practical applications.
Students will make their own Smartphone emission-spectrometers to explore chemical fingerprints and using spectroscopy to identify elements in unknown compositions. They will come to understand how this technique is used by research scientists to characterise common air pollutants and examine the degradation of everyday medicines such as aspirin.
Separation science – its importance and widespread use in the world of work will reveal to students how this scientific method is used to check how ‘fresh’ our fresh produce really is.
‘Cloud in a bottle’ illustrates concepts about cloud condensation and will be coupled with the chance to carry out small particle counts to consider how prevalent particles / aerosols are in the atmosphere and their effect on human health.
