Year 9 pupils from Pen y Dre High School visited University of South Wales, Upper Glyntaf Campus, to experience the Chemistry of Christmas. During their visit, the young people made candles, hand cream, bath bombs and Christmas tree decorations using chemistry in the labs. Each of the items was packed into gift bags and could be used as Christmas gifts if desired.
Nicola Enticknap, from the school said: “Thank you for organising yesterday, the pupils couldn’t wait to tell everyone about it today!”
The event attracted great feedback from the young people, 75% of whom had not visited a University before. When asked about the best part of the event, responses were:
“The making of the items was the best part, in my opinion, because you can see the chemical reactions take place and see how chemistry changes things.”
“All of it, enjoyed every second.”
Making the items featured heavily as the best part in the responses, in particular the bath bombs!
