At this time of year it makes me think about my role as a parent. When we drop our kids off at school does our responsibility stop there? What can we do as parent to improve the links between parents and teachers and the school? The ownership belongs to us, yet sometimes we see it as the place that has the kids between 9 and 3. So how can we work together to improve our children's experience?”
This commentary was written by Tony Western pictured above, who took part in an innovative project to launch a parent led newsletter at Windsor Clive Junior School, Ely, Cardiff. Supported by Glyn Ellis, Deputy Head teacher, Tony and a group of parents have established a press room at the school and are about to publish their first school newsletter “Grand Avenue Times”.
The group developed from a number of family learning digital storytelling programs run at the school and have just completed an OCN in desktop publishing for their work on the newsletter. A website design course, led by Jonathan Hawkins whose younger sister attends the school, is also being constructed by the parents to host the newsletters.
