350 primary school children from across Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend visited the University of Glamorgan this month to take part in a series of workshops including circus skills, card making and a visit to the University’s planetarium. Otherwise know as the ‘Primary Carousel’, this event is run by the First Campus initiative and is aimed at raising pupils’ academic aspirations and their awareness of Higher Education in a fun and educationally informative manner.
A visit to the University’s portable planetarium had pupils learning about the solar system and the different star formations in the night sky and the card making session introduced pupils to a variety of craft and card making methods. Schools taking part included Parc Lewis Primary, Tonyrefail Primary, Porth Junior School and Maerdy Juniors. 10 year-old Porth Primary pupil Ffion Williams enjoyed the day. She commented, “Visiting the University gave me a good idea of what university is like and I think I would like to go to university in the future. I really enjoyed the circus skills workshop because we were taught that we should never say that we can’t do something. “I enjoyed myself during the day, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had!” Kath Maddy, Head of First Campus commented, “The event was an introduction to the university campus and we emphasised the fun aspects of learning enabling the children to take away positive impressions and memories of higher education. “The emphasis throughout the day was on the importance of persistence and how to learn from failure and the pupils excelled themselves on both accounts.” |
