The STEM R • A • P Tour: Revise • Aspire • Perform

Background to the Tour

Our popular GCSE revision project The STEM R:A:P Tour Revise : Aspire : Perform returns in Autumn 2015, touring to up to nine schools in the First Campus area. Rather than asking schools / pupils to come to us we are bringing the sessions to the schools, delivered using a unique approach by professional providers. The STEM: RAP event is designed to give pupils the tools, techniques and confidence they need to succeed in the areas of revision techniques, revision planning and exam techniques prior to the October break.

We have designed the day so that it can be tailored to a schools' lesson times and works best when an entire year group is taken off timetable. The school can choose whether the Tour targets Year 10, Year 11 or a mixed group; it’s suitable for C/D borderline, MAT and everyone else.

The first session will look at how we learn, learning styles and the teenage brain. The rest of the day is a carousel of activities: revision techniques; exam techniques; revision diaries; and a session including a rap performance to support the pupils’ learning and to raise their aspirations within the STEM subjects.

In addition resources supporting the delivery of the STEM RAP Tour can be found in the Revision Resources tab and are suitable for use by teachers or students.

The STEM R.A.P Tour consists of 5 elements which can be tailored to the schools' lesson times.

1. An Introductory Session

Delivered by Lyn Howell, a former Deputy Head, his session will introduce the students to the teenage brain; learning styles; how we all hard-wired for learning; and why one revision technique doesn’t suit everybody. The aim of this session is to give the students a better understanding of how they learn and revise.

2. Revision Techniques

Delivered by Lyn Howell, this session will provide an indepth look at different revision techniques and how these work for different learning styles.  Allowing the students to identify techniques which will work for them.

3. Exam Techniques

Hannah Townsend of Free Range Learning (www.free-range-learning.co.uk) will show the pupils how to approach exams with the help of a small collection of friendly animals* making the skills learnt in the session accessible and memorable. The session will help students identify what to look for on exam papers, how to use the marking scheme ti identify what the question is asking and the depth of answer required.  It will help them to plan a calm, effective approach to tackling an exam paper; and how to write clear answers that gain the maximum marks available.  With a focus on maths, science and technology, and using plenty of real examples, this session will help pupils become familiar with the language and structure of exam questions and provide some useful tools for planning and checking their answers. The aim of the session is to give the pupils confidence in planning their revision and tackling exams.

*All the animals used in this session are friendly, docile, and regularly part of educational activities with all ages. They will be safely and comfortably confined in their carrier between activities with the carrier being secured and kept with Hannah at all times. Only Hannah will handle the animals as she is an experienced and qualified animal handler and will ensure that the animal based activities are safe, well managed and relevant to the topic. First Campus would not offer this session unless they were certain that the welfare of both the students and animals was given utmost priority and that it could be delivered safely.

4. Revision Diaries

Rebecca Clark of Green City Events is an experienced events manager and project co-ordinator these roles depend on her being highly organised and well prepared for every situation. In this revision rescue session Rebecca will introduce the students to revision timetables and why they are essential.  She'll cover what makes a good or bad timetable as well as guiding the students through the design of their own personal revision diary. It would be helpful if a schedule of the students exams could be made available for this session.

5. Rap Science

The session will use a selection of educational raps and associated videos written and produced by Jon Chase from Rap Science. (www.scienceraps.co.uk/rap_science_index.html) In particular the videos will cover topics such as the influence of science and technology; opportunities in STEM; Revision Skills; and a few specific science/maths based raps that highlight how particular topics can be creatively presented to aid in revision and/or recollection of information. The aim of the session is to provide an informative, alternative and entertaining look at learning and remembering information in different ways and to raise aspirations to work and study in STEM. Jon's S.T.E.M Rap video can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqJ1l02TXtA
