Polish students cook up a storm at UWIC |
Polish pupils from schools across South East Wales visited the University of Wales Institute Cardiff's catering facilities recently to produce a menu of Polish specialities. Pupils from four different schools took part in the event and were assisted by Polish university students from UWIC and the University of Glamorgan. The food on offer included Pickled Cucumber Soup, a Polish speciality called Golabkie (cabbage rolls), and sweet and savoury pancakes.

The event was the part of a longer programme organised by First Campus to support Polish pupils in RCT who have little English and have been struggling to cope in school. A team of Polish students from the University of Glamorgan have visited their school each week to support them and be on hand in their classes to translate and advise.
Many schools have very few Polish students attending, which means the pupils can be quite isolated. First Campus hoped that this event would bring together pupils from different schools and allow them to make new friends and contacts.
Annika Young, BME Coordinator at UWIC was really pleased to see how well the pupils worked together. ‘We had a great atmosphere on the day. Everything was a bit hectic, as we were putting together about ten different dishes, but everyone pulled together really well and made a huge success of things. The food was wonderful!’
