Title: On the Road

This weekend I have been working in Wrexham and Bagor. I am usually based in Pontypridd and visit the other Universities and schools in my area, but I also work in partnership with the other universities in Wales, such as NEWI (Wrexham) and Bangor University.

Saturday was the Sciencetriffic event at NEWI which is part of the Wrexham Science Festival, I went along with Ray Newberry, a lecturer in Food Science from UWIC to present a workshop on the science of chocolate (see photos on the News and Events page). It went down a storm with the families who attened! They got to learn about the process of tempering chocolate as well as tasting the results! Ray was able to give people information on different courses available in the area of food science as well as examples of different careers avaiable to graduates.

There were lots of other workshops and demonstrations happening through out the day including the prize presenation for the Hands on Sciecne Schools Radio Competition

On Monday I was in Bangor at the School of Chemistry at Bangor University. Here they were running 3 days of GCSE Chemistry revision for local seconday school pupils in Year 10. The day was really interesting as the pupils were taken into the labs to carry out lots of experiments as well as being given lectures on bonding, the Earth and plate techtonics, nano technology and a demonstartion of how to meka ice cream using liquid nitrogen! Each session was followed by a chance to complete exam questions with the help of their specially written revision guides and Chemistry students from the University.

To round the day off the pupils were presented with a demonstration full of loud bangs and explosions! All with full sciencetific explanations!
