Newport Care Leavers' Open Day

On 4th February nine children came along to Newport University with their carers, braving the snow which had just started to fall.

The first item on the agenda was an introduction to First Campus and the University, followed by a tour of the new campus and facilities.  During the tour the visitors saw traditional tiered lecture theatre, dance studios, state of the art film & music recording studios, the library and the fashion department.

Staff from Newport City Council were on hand with advice on what support was offered for care leavers entering Higher Education.  After lunch, served in the Bistro, everyone joined in an animation activity which was run by First Campus Student Ambassadors.  The mini animations that were created will be sent to all the children that attended.  At the end of the day the children left with goody bags as little mementos of their visit to Newport University.

The feedback received after the event was excellent.  One of the carers commented; 'Following the visit 3 out of 4 of the young people decided they were definitely going to attend university when they are at the right age (however they would attend tomorrow if they were able!). It was a really good experience and gave an insight into what facilities are available on our doorstep. I will certainly encourage other people to visit next year.'

The open day follows a 6 month contribution that First Campus has made to the Letterbox packs, sent out by seven Local Authorities to looked-after children across South East Wales.  These packs contain educational items such as books, puzzles and stationery to enhance numeracy and literacy skills.
