Mentoring has been highlighted as becoming increasingly important in the workplace, community and voluntary settings. Many organisations are beginning to recognise the benefits of mentoring as a way of supporting colleagues/fellow students and pupils in meeting individual and organisational objectives and priorities. First Campus has been involved in mentoring for many years. During the first stages of the project, students were trained by Alan Evans’ team at Cardiff University and worked with a number of schools across the First Campus area. The scheme brought together university students and pupils either studying for or considering GCSEs. The scheme has now entered a new phase and is being built on in a number of ways. First Campus staff at University of Wales Institute Cardiff and the University of Glamorgan have developed accredited university mentoring modules that enable students to take part in the scheme and gain academic credit for the experience. First Campus are also expanding their mentoring training provision in schools to provide support for peer mentoring schemes, whereby older school students mentor younger years. These schemes are running in a number of different schools and First Campus staff are providing training and input to help support these initiatives. |
