Year 10 pupils visited First Campus at Newport to work with Creative Therapies and Applied Drama students on a drama about university life.
During the first part of the day the Creative Therapies students helped the pupils to express their feelings about what life in university might be like. The groups then looked at some common themes and the Applied Drama students built on these during the second part of the day.
The drama activities started with a warm up using yoga techniques and an all over body warm up – including vocals!
This was followed by a group discussion around a scene that the Applied Drama students acted out. The scene depicted a careers interview between a pupil (complete with ‘conscience’) and a career’s officer. Finally in smaller groups the pupils developed tableaux depicting positive and negative reactions to situations they may find themselves in whilst at University, such as missing their family or getting lost on campus.
They were able to use lighting and music to enhance the atmosphere and mood they were hoping to create. Liz Bailey who led the event at university of Wales Newport said 'The idea is to get the pupils thinking about what going away to University will mean for them, and about situations they will face once they arrive. We hope to break down any barriers and try to make university feel more accessible.'
