The Saturday morning academy met for eight weeks and the children worked on three performance pieces ready for the final show. The young people were formed into eight ensemble groups with a guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer, vocalist and keyboard player in each. The groups were working on one of four genres, classic rock, soul and funk, punk and reggae. The state of the art facilities in the Atrium played host as the groups who were all meeting for the first time, worked together to build their music skills, learning how to work alongside other musicians, keep time and play as a group. The event culminated in a gig to a packed out audience of friends and families at the Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff. It was standing room only as more than 200 people watched the groups perform their three pieces. Jane Ellis, First Campus Coordinator at the University of Glamorgan, said that ‘Eight weeks was a very tight schedule since everyone had so much to learn. It was a challenge and a steep learning curve for those involved and all the young people worked hard to produce a fantastic final show’.
Jane is seeking funding to roll out the programme further. For more information, contact Jane Ellis on 01443 482912. |
