Hoodies to Goodies Fashion Project
During the school summer holiday members of the Newport City Homes Youth Forum worked with Anne-Marie Hodder and Emily McCarthy, who are fashion students at the University of Wales, Newport.  The project was a collaboration between First Campus and Newport City Homes and a good example of the work that takes place in the community.  The idea was for the young people to customise blank hoodies using a variety of different methods, which they could then use as a “uniform” for their Youth Forum.

The group worked with Anne-Marie and Emily for four sessions, designing, sampling and then transferring their designs onto the hoodies.  Three of the sessions took place at the University of Wales, Newport and during their visits First Campus student ambassadors Vicki Middleton and Gabby Jackson took the young people on a campus tour.  The accommodation block was of particular interest!  Many of the young people didn’t know where the University was and in some cases, that there was a University here at all.

The fifth and final session took place at Shaftesbury Sheltered Complex, Newport.  The young people took their hoodies to show the older generation of Newport the work they have been involved in.  This helped the two different generations to relate to each other and help to dispel any misconceptions they may have had about one another.  Liz Bailey (First Campus Schools and Community Officer) was there to hand out certificates and congratulate the young people on their efforts.  She said “The project has enabled young people to spend some time on a university campus, working on a project that interests them and has opened their eyes to one of the many different courses that are available at universities.”
