| Fifth annual Stock Market Challenge |
BUDDING young brokers traded stocks and shares for a £1,000 prize when First Campus held the fifth annual Stock Market Challenge. Around 100 pupils from 15 schools across South Wales got a flavour of the bear pit atmosphere of the trading floor when the event took place at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). This was the first time that the event has run on a University campus, and UWIC’s Cardiff School of Management kindly sponsored the winning prizes for the top three teams, with £1,000 for the winners, Abersychan Comprehensive from Pontypool. Abersychan’s team of year nine pupils who were competing against year ten pupils, had the largest closing portfolio of £132,400. They resisted some stiff competition from second-placed Cyfarthfa High School from Merthyr who had a closing portfolio of £102,600 and won £500 for their school, and St Teilo's C in W High School from Cardiff who came third with a closing portfolio of £57,200 and won £300 for their school. Annie Davies, First Campus Coordinator at UWIC, said: “Through Stock Market Challenge we are helping to develop pupils’ key-skills such as teamwork and communication. We aim to promote the importance of financial literacy and introduce pupils to the world of work and to the opportunities available to them in higher education.” The Stock Market Challenge event is a financial and educational learning resource which uses the experience of a live stock market trading floor to introduce young people to business, finance and enterprise. The event allows pupils to learn how to work as a team, make decisions under pressure, take calculated risks and experience the excitement of the trading floor.10 Lane Learning Events Stock Market Challenge is produced by 10 Lane Learning, previously known as Cause Direct.
