Pupils from St Michael's Primary
School in Treforest have recently taken part in a sustainability
workshop programme with Hands on Science inspired by the Woodland Walk
on the University of Glamorgan's Treforest Campus. The workshops looked at sustainability, and how we interact with our environment. Pupils took part in workshops led by Ben Williams of Keep Wales Tidy, who looked at tree identification and wildlife in the Woodland Walk area. They also visited The Works (www.theworksebbwvale.co.uk) in Ebbw Vale taking part in a 'sustainable lunches' workshop with Veronika Brannovic, People and Wildlife Project Leader for Gwent Wildlife Trust and visited the Welsh Future Homes with Helen Reardon, Projects Officer for Community Engagement at The Works. Staff from the University of Glamorgan's Geography department ran two further workshops looking at the local environment and the University campus, encouraging the pupils to notice their surrounds and how they can influence their environment. Pupils were encouraged to use map reading and observational skills to discuss the sustainable and non-sustainable aspects of their environment, and finally plotted a large-scale map on the floor of the school hall to show all the aspects of the local environment they had explored.
