Science Rap Video Competition Awards 2011
On Wednesday 30th March, pupils, parents and teachers gathered at the University of Glamorgan's Students' Union to find out the winners of the Science Rap Video Competition 2011.

The competition, funded by the National HE STEM programme and sponsored by the Science Photo Library (www.sciencephoto.com), was launched in January and challenged school pupils across South East Wales to write a rap about physics and film a video to go with it.

The finalists in the competition came from four local secondary schools. Runners up in the competition were teams from Howells Girls School and Whitchurch High School, who both won Hands on Science goody bags which included First Campus merchandise, Science Photo Library calendars, a Rubik's Cube, a solar system mobile, and 'science putty'. Highly commended for his 'Nanotechnology' rap was Anas from Gwaencelyn Primary School. Anas was the only Primary School submission and only solo entrant. The overall winners were 'The White Dwarfs' team from Tonypandy Community College who wrote a rap about the life cycle of stars. Alison Somerville from the Science Photo Library presented the winners with their trophy and prizes that included HD flip cameras, shopping vouchers, and science goody bags, as well as a year's free subscription to the Science Photo Library, worth around £300, for their school.

Astrobiology rapper Jon Chase, who helped to launch the competition, performed 'A Better View', a rap written especially for the Science Photo Library (SPL) which was put to moving images by Alison Somerville from SPL.

One of the competition judges, Alessio Bernadelli, a physics teacher currently on secondment to NGfL Cymru as a filed officer has also blogged about the event here:
