Name: Claire Rocks Age: 28 Location: Bristol Job/position:Network Co-ordinator, Walking with Robots University/Company:University of the West of England Brief summary of Education: I took A-levels in Physics, Maths and Biology and went out to do a degree in Physics at the University of Salford. After that I did a PhD in Space Robotics at Aberystwyth University, and was lucky enough to work with the Beagle 2 team. During my PhD I was very interested in communicating Science and Engineering and took part in a number of initiatives including Researchers in Residence and NOISE (New Outlooks in Science and Engineering). I also helped run a twice weekly science club at a school in Aberystwyth. I am now able to use experience in both the science communication and robotics, combining the latest research in the UK with managing a number of events on a variety of different scales. No day is the same, and the people I meet, and work with, can be designers, artists, engineers, science centres and schools, to name a few. The last fortnight has involved filming for a schools documentary on the engineering of robots, managing the launch meeting of an exciting new project where young people, through a vision conference, will have the opportunity to explore their views of robots in the future, and to express those views to researchers, experts and policy makers. I have also taken been preparing for a project building a robot garden at a school in Wrexham. If you would like more information about this project see the Walking with Robots website here. |
