Members of the Junior Bee (Becoming Enterprising and Employable) After School Club joined forces with the First Campus team at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) to give 80 pupils a taster in business and university life.
Chris Webb, First Campus Officer at UWIC said: “The club was aimed at key stage 3 pupils with an interest in business and enterprise and for those considering business as a GCSE option. It allowed them to experience studying in a university environment and to ask questions about being a university student and the variety of courses available. “The club introduced the foundations of business including strategy and planning, the creative elements of business, the five stages of setting up a business, social enterprise and developing entrepreneurial skills. Each week the pupils had to complete interactive tasks which built and developed their business and personal skills. In the final week the pupils created their own pack of cards which will act as an A to Z of what they learnt, found challenging and developed both academically and personally.” The cards designed by the pupils have been professionally printed and were presented to them along with certificates at a graduation ceremony recently to celebrate their achievements and enjoy a talk from one of Cardiff’s Dynamo Role Models, Ed Jones. Diane Higgs, Head of Year Eight at Michaelston Community College said: “Our pupils have benefited from this experience as coming to a university gets them thinking about Higher Education and that everybody can do it.” Linda Duffy, Community Focus Schools Co-coordinator at Llanrumney added: “We’re really pleased to be involved with this First Campus Project which has helped our children meet their potential and encouraged them to aim high.” The picture by Glenn Edwards, shows Junior Bee participants with First Campus Officer Chris Webb. |
