| Bloodhound Challenge Test Day |
|
First Campus has collaborated with Engineering Education Scheme Wales (E.E.S.W) to fund Year 6 pupils to take part in the Primary Bloodhound SSC Challenge. Working on the Bloodhound Challenge the youngsters have designed a model car using CAD software, and then machined the car from balsa wood. Each of the schools has received support with the design and engineering elements from current students at University of Wales, Newport and the University of Glamorgan. On 11th January, the 34 Year 6 pupils taking part from Oaklands, Tonyrefail and Maesglas Primary Schools came to the University of Wales, Newport to collect the model cars they have designed. During their visit to the University they sanded them down, fitted the wheels and raced them against each other on the 30m track, to test for the fastest car at this stage. The cars now have to be painted and branded ready for the regional final at the Waterfront Museum, Swansea on 7th February. ![]() Well done to the Speed Hound Team from Maesglas Primary School, Newport, shown in the photograph, who won with an impressive time of 1.332 seconds! Thank you to Bilhar Lehal, Tim Trimarco and Fran Castle from the Design & Technology department at University of Wales, Newport for their help during the day, in the workshop and with the track. First Campus would like to wish all the teams good luck for the regional final, which involves displaying a portfolio of their designs as well as delivering a team presentation to a panel of judges.
